We visited on Tuesday 27 October, Halloween half term week.

Half term and Halloween in the same week? That is a lot of excitement for tiny people (and a lot of planning for us).

We went to Hatters this week (muddy, magical and totally worth it), so here are my quick tips for making the most of this week with under 4s.

Last minute Halloween, little ones style

You do not need a big event to make it feel special.

A pumpkin hunt on a walk, spotting them on doorsteps

Wearing a costume to the shops or a play date

Something orange for lunch and a spooky story at bedtime

Trick or treat early on Saturday while it is still light

For babies and toddlers, short and simple is the magic.

If you are heading to Hatters

Wellies, a puddle suit, wipes for the mud, and a plastic bag for the muddy kit at the end

Use the wheelbarrows on site to push little ones around, rather than wrecking your pram

Ask a member of staff when the characters are on in the Mad Hatters tea party rooms

Only portaloos on site, so be ready for a tricky nappy change

If you need dairy free, treat options are limited (we found chocolate strawberries that worked for us)

And if your little one is potty trained, a kids travel wees pot (a kids shewee style bottle) is worth practising with at home. Once they are used to it, you will have far fewer fights trying to wrestle a puddle suit off mid outing… unless they need a poop, of course 🤣

I like this one: KIDDIWHIZZ portable travel potty (Amazon affiliate link).

If you can, go midweek and earlier in the month. It is likely to be less muddy if the weather is kind, less worn in, and there may still be some grass.

Half term this week

Essex schools are off from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, back on Monday 2 November.

Most baby and toddler groups are off during half term unless they say otherwise. If a group is term time only, it is definitely off this week.

Thursday highlight: Little Berries

Little Berries runs all year, including school holidays, so Thursday morning still has somewhere to go.

It is at Littlebury Village Hall, 10 to 11:30am. I will be there running it, so come and say hello!

Details: Little Berries Play Group

Check before you go

Look at the group or venue's own page or Facebook for half term changes

Soft play and seasonal events can get busy, so book ahead where you can

Pack snacks and a spare outfit (face paint and toddlers rarely mix well)

Whatever you get up to, have a lovely half term and a happy Halloween! 🎃
