When it came to buying a baby monitor, I knew one thing straight away.
I did not want one that connected to WiFi.
We have plenty of smart home tech in our house. Smart doorbell, smart bits and pieces, all the usual things. So I am definitely not anti tech. But when it comes to a camera in the room where my baby sleeps, gets changed, plays and generally exists in all those very private little moments, I just wanted something that felt simple and secure.
That is why we went for the HelloBaby HB6550 Baby Monitor.

Why I wanted a no WiFi baby monitor
A while ago, I remember seeing a really horrible news story about unsecured cameras being accessed online. The story that stuck with me was about a Russian website streaming footage from hacked webcams, CCTV cameras and baby monitors.
It was not just a vague “hackers might do this” kind of warning. It involved real camera feeds from people’s homes, businesses and private spaces being made publicly available. The Information Commissioner’s Office warned at the time that many of these cameras were vulnerable because they were internet connected and not properly secured.
That completely put me off WiFi baby monitors.
That is not to scare anyone. Plenty of people use WiFi monitors and smart cameras safely, and the National Cyber Security Centre has guidance on using smart cameras and baby monitors securely, including changing default passwords, keeping software updated and switching off remote access if you do not need it.
But honestly, for me, I did not want another thing to manage.
I did not want to think about passwords, apps, updates, accounts, access, WiFi changes or whether something had been set up properly. I just wanted a monitor that worked without connecting to the internet at all.
What we bought
We bought the HelloBaby HB6550 Baby Monitor, with two cameras and one monitor.
It uses its own signal between the camera and the parent monitor, so it does not connect to your WiFi. There is no app, no phone login, no cloud storage and no faffing about with your home internet.
You plug the camera in, switch the monitor on, and it works.
And to be honest, that has been one of the biggest benefits.
It is brilliant for travel
One thing I did not fully appreciate until we had it was how easy it is to take away.
If we go somewhere like Center Parcs, we just unplug the camera, pack the monitor and charger, and plug it in when we arrive. There is no messing around trying to connect it to a new WiFi network. No app refusing to behave. No signal issues because the accommodation WiFi is being weird.
It just works.
That alone has made it worth it for us.
Yes, you do need to carry the physical monitor around and keep it charged, but I actually like that. It is separate from my phone, so I am not draining my phone battery or accidentally getting distracted by notifications when I am just trying to keep an eye on my daughter.
The picture and sound are really clear
The screen is a good size and the night vision is clear enough that you can properly see what is going on.
The audio is good too. You can turn the volume down if you want, and there is also a VOX setting, so the screen can wake when sound is detected. It also shows the room temperature, which is handy, especially when you are doing that classic parent thing of wondering if they are too hot, too cold, or somehow both.
You can also talk through the monitor, which is useful, although I will admit it can sometimes be more entertaining than calming depending on the toddler.
The camera movement is really useful
The cameras can pan and tilt, so you are not stuck with one fixed view.
It is not quite full 360 degrees, but it moves a lot. I would say it gives you a really good wide range, and you can move the camera up and down too. That has been useful as our daughter has got older, because she is not always just lying in one neat little sleeping position anymore.
You can also switch between cameras really easily.
We live in a bungalow, so having two cameras has worked really well for us. One can be in the bedroom, and one can be in another room, like the playroom. If she is running backwards and forwards, or playing nearby while I am sorting something, I can keep an eye without hovering over her every second.
It has lasted really well
We have had ours for about two years now and it has been brilliant.
No real issues. No drama. It has been dropped. It has been played with by a toddler. It has been moved between rooms, packed for trips, unplugged, plugged back in, and generally used a lot.
My daughter knows the camera is there now. She waves at it and knows we can see her, which is very cute. It has just become part of normal family life.
And that is probably the best compliment I can give it. It is not flashy or complicated. It just does the job really well.
Things worth knowing
There are a few practical things to know before buying.
You do need the physical parent monitor with you. This is not something you can check from your phone while you are out of the house.
The cameras need to be plugged in, so you will need sockets near where you want to use them.
The monitor needs charging, so you do need to remember to keep it topped up.
But for me, those are tiny trade offs for the peace of mind of not having it connected to WiFi.
Would I recommend it?
Yes. Completely.
If you want a baby monitor that is simple, clear, reliable and does not connect to WiFi, I genuinely think the HelloBaby HB6550 is a great option.
It has been one of those purchases that has quietly done its job every day for two years, without making life more complicated. And when you are already tired, overstimulated and trying to keep a tiny human alive, that really does count for a lot.
